Backyard airsoft is a very controversial matter. People who oppose backyard airsoft say that people will call the police and a situation will start, thus giving airsoft bad media attention. The pro-backyarders say that people will notice the orange tips, however gangs paint their guns orange to pass it off as a replica, so most people will treat it like it is real. All in all, the backyard opposers seem to make a better point and have the proof. However, backyard airsoft can be made safe relatively if police and neighbors are alerted. Stray bb's can still strike neighbors and pets though, so it is still dangerous. Some backyard players buy nets with fine holes to avoid stray bb's hitting your neighbors or their pets.
